Fordson Tractor Starter Motor

The Lucas M45G starter motor fitting Fordson Diesel Major , Super Major, Power Major, Fordson Dexta , and Fordson Super Dexta
is a pre-engaged starter 12 volt motor of 1950's design featuring ;
a contact switch with adjustable mounting plate and rubber cover
M45G four brush starter motor(M) with a motor casing of 4.5 inches diameter (45)) with die cast commutator end bracket (G).

Actuation

Starter motor cranking is activated by depressing a manual lever which contacts a switch sending power from the battery to the coil of a remote solenoid. Energising the solenoid coil causes the solenoid main contacts to close allowing flow of high current circuit from the battery to the M45G starter motor.

Identification

Starter motor numbers are stamped on to the motor casing, please check because different drive end castings may be fitted.

Engine Mounting

Lucas 26143N mounts on RH side of Fordson Dexta engine (3 bolt mounting) as viewed from drivers seat.
Fordson Major starter motor is mounted on the LH side of the engine as viewed from drivers seat.
JCB 3c Mk1 fitted with Fordson 4d engine ; Starter motor is mounted on LH side as viewed from drivers seat.

Parts List for M45G lever operated tractor starter motor

Armature
The starter motor armature commutator surface should be even and free from pitting.
The commutator can be resurfaced by lightly skimming using a sharp tool in a centre lathe followed by polishing with fine grade glass paper (not emery cloth).
Blacking can be cleaned from the surface of the commutator using petrol moistened cloth.

Field Casing Yoke
Removal of field coils from the yoke requires removal of the field pole shoe screws which can be extremely tight and require use of specialist equipment such as a Crypton pole shoe screwdriver press, or pole shoe screws can be carefully drilled out then extracted.
