FUNCTION:

Core Plugs are fitted into the engine cylinder head and cylinder block to provide access during the manufacturing process .

Coolant leaks from core plugs

Core plugs in water galleries may become displaced in the event of sub zero temperatures if engine coolant does not contain sufficient antifreeze .

Core plugs fitted to engines generally corrode from the inside ie surface contacting the coolant, causing coolant loss.

Engine coolant should contain some form of corrosion inhibitor to delay this process.

Core plugs are often renewed during the engine rebuild process.
