Vehicle wiring
We recommend fitment of a 7 way bypass relay when installing 12N towbar electrics to reduce electrical load on vehicle wiring. Late model vehicles may require a vehicle specific wiring kit.
Tow bar wiring of vehicles with CANbus systems
Many modern vehicles have CANbus (Controller Area Network) wiring systems utilising single filament bulbs for combined tail and brake light function by varying the brightness of the bulb, done by powering the lamp with a (pulse width modulated) pulsed signal from a vehicle body control module. The body control module may receive inputs directly from switches and also send/receive serial data from/to other modules on the vehicle computer network. Such vehicles usually have sensitive electronics and will therefore require use of a 7 way bypass relay or manufacturer specific wiring harness when wiring towing electrics. In some instances the vehicle may require reconfiguration of control modules (coding adaptation) to program for towing.
